Belfast’s Homeless Crisis: We call for Urgent Government Action

The People’s Kitchen has issued a stark warning about the escalating homelessness crisis in the city. Following a visit from Communities Minister Gordon Lyons, Programme Coordinator and Independent Oldpark Councillor Paul McCusker emphasized the urgent need for increased support from Stormont to address the growing emergency on Belfast’s streets.

A Growing Crisis

The People’s Kitchen provides breakfast to over 80 individuals daily and connects them with health, addiction, and housing services. Mr. McCusker highlighted the charity’s expansion over the past nine years, noting a surge in demand, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. He stressed the importance of prevention and early intervention, stating, “We see the crisis every day, we see the devastation that homeless men and women and their families are having to face.”

Government Response

Minister Lyons acknowledged the severity of the situation and unveiled the Executive Housing Supply Strategy, aiming to provide cost-effective accommodation and support for those transitioning from temporary housing. He also announced an additional £6.7 million to prevent the closure of homeless services and ensure statutory obligations are met. Mr. Lyons emphasized the need for innovative solutions and a combined effort across departments to tackle homelessness effectively.

Community Efforts and Future Plans

The People’s Kitchen has launched a charter to end rough sleeping by the end of the current Assembly term. Plans are underway to establish a nighttime homeless support unit offering housing advice and medical support in collaboration with a local pharmacy. Damian McNairney from the charity stated,

“In the year 2025 there shouldn’t be people on the streets – we’re a wealthy enough society.”

The charity continues to rely solely on public funding and calls for a long-term commitment from the government to address homelessness comprehensively. Mr. McCusker emphasized the need for sustained support, noting that many homeless individuals resort to emergency departments for shelter, further straining the healthcare system.

The People’s Kitchen’s efforts underscore the critical need for coordinated action and sustained investment to combat homelessness in Belfast and beyond.
